ACL Knee Brace

From everyday exercise and extreme events, to leading an active lifestyle, our knees tend to be one of the most commonly injured parts of the body. At Physiotherapy Bloor West our knee brace specialists have been treating a wide variety of knee conditions, ligament damage and ACL surgery repair for over 45 years! During that time we have treated thousands of patients who have undergone knee surgery such as knee cartilage repair and ACL surgery to reconstruct the torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament. In combination with an active Physiotherapy program, our Physiotherapists will often prescribe a state-of-the-art custom fitted ACL knee brace. These innovative ACL brace designs and technologies help our patients to prevent, and rehabilitate from knee injuries and knee surgery. An ACL brace also provides an excellent adjunct to Physiotherapy. Following ACL reconstructive surgery, surgeons and physiotherapists will often prescribe, and patients frequently request a functional ACL brace. A properly prescribed and custom fitted ACL brace has been clinically proven to reduce strain on the ACL and also provides our patients with the confidence to begin the journey back to their previous levels of activity. Whether you are itching to get back to the hockey rink, football field, volleyball court, basketball court, or to stroll around the block, we will help get you back to your activity or sport, safely and confidently !

Reasons for an ACL Brace:

Following reconstructive knee surgery such as an ACL repair, there are three primary reasons for wearing a custom fitted functional knee brace: A custom fitted functional ACL knee brace is the most widely accepted and clinically proven way of protecting a healing ACL after ACL surgery.

  1. The ligament graft requires sufficient time to heal. it is at its weakest point from 6-12 weeks following knee surgery
  2. A functional knee brace provides a constant and psychological reminder to the patient that they have undergone surgery and need to ease back into normal physical activity. Also an excellent adjunct to Physiotherapy.
  3. Offers peace of mind to the surgeon, physiotherapist, and patient, that the knee is protected.

Preventative ACL Knee Brace; Not Only For Rehabilitation

Many High School, University, Professional, and 'weekend warrior' athletes wear a customized knee brace as a preventative measure to guard against potential injury. Recent clinical studies have shown that athletes who wore a custom fitted functional ACL knee brace, were estimated to reduce their chance of a non contact ACL injury by over 50%.
  • 50% of ACL tears occur between the ages of 15-25
  • Preventative bracing greatly reduces the athletes risk of sustaining a knee injury
  • Superior comfort and fit without restricting performance
  • High School athletes are the number one age group most likely to tear their ACL
  • High School football players are 2x more likely to suffer a season ending knee injury than University Players

Women and ACL tears

  • Women are 10x more likely to suffer a non contact ACL injury than are men
  • Majority of female ACL tears and injury occur during 'Run, Stop, Jump' activities; such as basketball, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, gymnastics, and softball.
  • A customized female specific ACL knee brace significantly reduces the occurrence of injury and re-injury to the ACL
