TED Stockings Help Prevent and Treat Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
TED stockings, also known as T.E.D. (Thrombo Embolic Deterrent) stockings, are anti-embolism stockings for the legs which help prevent blood clots or DVT's (Deep Vein Thrombosis). A DVT is a blood clot or 'thrombus' which can develop in a deep vein, generally in the leg, and less frequently in the arm. This condition can happen if the vein has been damaged, if blood flow has been compromised, or completely stops. A DVT can cause intense pain in the leg and can also lead to much more serious complications if it becomes dislodged (embolism) and travels through the blood stream and reaches the lungs or heart. How Do TED Stockings Help In The Treatment of DVT ?
TED stockings are a long and tighter fitting 'sock' that maintains mild and continuous pressure on the legs to prevent blood from clotting. This is achieved by preventing blood from sitting idle and promoting venous return. TED stockings should be worn during periods of inactivity, after surgery, while travelling in a car for long periods, on an airplane, and if there is any family history of blood clots or poor circulation.Who should wear TED Anti-embolism stockings ?
TED stockings and anti embolism stockigns are recommended for individuals undergoing or experiencing the following conditions:- Patients who have undergone surgery and their surgeon has prescribed TED stockings
- A major injury or accident
- Any prolonged bed rest or immobility
- Surgery specifically involving the legs or joints
- Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
- Family history of circulatory problems or blood clots (DVT)
- Long distance travel by plane, car, or train
